PLN Partners with Australia to Advance Energy Modelling System for Green Energy

Indonesia’s PLN Partners with Australia to Revolutionize Energy Modeling

PT PLN (Persero), Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, has announced a strategic collaboration with Australia-based Energy Exemplar to enhance its energy infrastructure through the adoption of the sophisticated Plexos Energy Modelling System. This partnership aims to address the challenges of integrating variable renewable energy (VRE) sources like solar and wind into Indonesia’s national grid, as the country targets a 75% renewable energy mix by 2040.

PLN CEO Darmawan Prasodjo highlighted the complexities of transitioning from coal-dominated baseload power to an intermittent renewable-based system. To stabilize supply, PLN is investing in battery energy storage systems and fast-response power plants, while deploying Smart Grid technologies—spanning smart metering, dispatch, and distribution. A major milestone includes developing a 70,000-kilometer green transmission network connecting hydro and geothermal power plants from remote regions to urban demand centers.

Energy Exemplar’s Head of Energy Modelling, Ali Ghahremanlou, expressed support for Indonesia’s renewable energy goals, committing expertise in engineering and capacity building. This collaboration aligns with PLN’s broader strategy to benchmark best practices globally and solidify Indonesia’s leadership in sustainable energy systems.
