Indonesia Reaffirms Climate Commitment Despite U.S. Withdrawal from Paris Agreement

Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to climate action despite the United States’ recent withdrawal from the Paris Agreement under President Donald Trump. Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq emphasized that Indonesia will continue its climate initiatives in alignment with President Prabowo Subianto’s stance, as articulated during the G20 Summit in Brazil. He highlighted that Indonesia is focusing on low-carbon development, the circular economy, and carbon valuation to support food and energy security while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

During a hearing with the House of Representatives, Hanif underscored that Indonesia’s 2025 environmental goals include reducing emissions by 26.67%, improving waste management, and enhancing environmental sustainability indices. He also referenced Asta Cita, President Prabowo’s development program, which prioritizes climate resilience, green economy expansion, and industrial downstreaming. These efforts align with Indonesia’s broader commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through initiatives like biodiesel and geothermal energy adoption.

The U.S. withdrawal, executed via an Executive Order on January 20, 2025, marked a policy shift under Trump’s administration, but Indonesia remains firm in its sustainability agenda. The nation’s dedication to climate action underscores its role as a proactive participant in global environmental efforts, ensuring that commitments made at the G20 Summit translate into tangible progress toward a greener future.
