Greenpeace and Center of Economic and Law Studies (CELIOS) have given a negative assessment of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka‘s first 100 days in office. In a joint report, they criticized the government’s policies on several fronts, particularly its environmental impact and the slow progress on energy transition. One of the key points was the government’s controversial plan to convert 20 million hectares of forest for food and energy estates, a move that Greenpeace argues will harm biodiversity and accelerate deforestation.

The government’s energy policies have also come under heavy scrutiny. Greenpeace awarded the administration a failing grade of “D” for its efforts in shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Despite promises to reduce reliance on coal, the government continues to support the construction of new coal-fired power plants, including those linked to nickel smelting operations. This marks a significant setback in the country’s transition to renewable energy sources. Leonard Simanjuntak, Head of Greenpeace Indonesia, further criticized the emphasis on gas as a “transitional fuel,” pointing out that it remains a fossil fuel and its increased use could delay meaningful progress.

These environmental concerns come amidst broader criticisms of Prabowo-Gibran’s governance, which has been accused of favoring oligarchic interests and lacking substantial reforms. As they approach the 100-day mark, it is clear that the new administration’s policies on environmental sustainability and energy transition will require significant revision if Indonesia is to meet its climate goals.
