In a major push for Indonesia’s energy independence, President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated 37 strategic power projects totaling 3.2 gigawatts (GW) on January 20, 2025. The inauguration, held at the Jatigede Hydropower Plant (PLTA) in Sumedang, West Java, marked a significant milestone in the government’s 100-day agenda to accelerate national energy infrastructure and transition to sustainable power sources.

The newly launched projects, spread across 18 provinces, include hydropower, gas-fired, solar, and biomass plants, with 89% of the capacity sourced from renewable energy. This initiative aligns with Indonesia’s goal of reaching 23% renewable energy usage by 2025, as emphasized by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia. The projects are also expected to reduce fossil fuel dependency, cut carbon emissions, and enhance electricity access in remote areas.
President Prabowo highlighted the crucial role of electricity in industrial growth, stating that reliable and affordable energy is key to achieving 8% economic growth. The government also plans to expand transmission networks by 8,000 km, ensuring efficient distribution of renewable power to industrial hubs and newly developed regions. The initiative reflects Indonesia’s commitment to energy self-sufficiency and long-term sustainability.
