Job Description

Busselton has twice been voted Western Australia’s Top Tourism Town. Nestled on the northern facing shores of beautiful Geographe Bay, this popular resort town offers an array of activities, attractions, tours and events.

We currently have an opportunity for a Conservation Employee – Overseer to join our team in the Blackwood District.

Under the direction of the Works Centre Coordinator, you will supervise and lead Conservation Employees and contractors in a range of activities related to the department’s works programs including conservation, parks and visitor services and fire management.

Selection Criteria

Applicants should submit a cover letter using all following criteria as a guide to express their interest in being selected for interview. The interview process will also be used to assess these criteria and desirable criteria will be assessed as required.

  • Ability to supervise and coach others in a range of work programs, identify training needs, conduct training as appropriate, and promote an environment of continuous learning.
  • Ability to plan and implement works programs in an efficient manner, organize resources, determine day to day priorities, and ensure best practice work procedures and quality control measures are implemented.
  • Physically fit for “on the ground” operational fire work and be able to pass the departmental fire fitness test.
  • Be available for fire service consistent with the AWU (WA Public Sector) Award 1992 and any prevailing industrial agreements, including regular participation in fire availability rosters on weekends and out of hours; plus, ongoing willingness and ability to participate in fire management activities that contribute to bushfire suppression and prescribed burning operations commensurate with capability, training and level of experience.
  • Evidence of good writing skills including the ability to produce reports and programs and apply computer skills relevant to the requirements of the job.
  • Experience in the construction and maintenance of infrastructure relevant to the department. (Desirable)

  • Good oral and interpersonal skills, ability to work effectively in a team and under limited supervision with departmental employees and contractors.
  • Ability to work with other parties, liaising and negotiating to achieve positive outcomes and ensuring all factors are taken into account before operational works commence.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of fauna, flora and hygiene management, and a sound understanding of the use of poisons, pesticides and herbicides.
  • Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management or ability and willingness to acquire.
  • Understanding of work health and safety, and equity and diversity principles and practices.
  • Western Australian ‘MR’ and ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licences.
  • Senior First Aid Certificate. (Desirable)
