The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) have joined forces to revolutionize renewable energy planning by utilizing weather data. This collaboration is part of the Australia-Indonesia Climate and Infrastructure Partnership (KINETIK), aimed at integrating climate insights into energy strategies.

During his visit to Jakarta, David McQueen of BOM highlighted the critical role of weather data in shaping future energy systems. “We’re thrilled to partner with Indonesian organizations to incorporate weather and climate information into renewable energy planning,” he said. BMKG’s Deputy for Climatology, Dr. Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, reaffirmed BMKG’s commitment to providing climate services, emphasizing their significance in ensuring a sustainable energy supply and reducing power outages caused by weather variability.

This initiative builds on the growing cooperation between Australia and Indonesia in addressing climate change and energy transition, reinforced by recent agreements on energy cooperation, electric vehicle development, and financial support for Indonesia’s renewable energy projects.
